Support for education
We direct our charitable attention towards the teaching and transmission of Orthodox Jewish religious knowledge.
Supporting the institutions and traditions through which religious knowledge can be passed from one generation to the next.

Our mission is to collect and distribute charitable funds to organisations established to further Orthodox Jewish education and religion.
By supporting organisations already engaged in religious teaching, study and practice, we seek to contribute to the continuing life of these institutions, with responsible trustee oversight of our resources.
We direct our charitable attention towards the teaching and transmission of Orthodox Jewish religious knowledge.
We recognise organisations that sustain worship, observance and religious participation.
We administer and distribute charitable resources under trustee oversight, consistent with our registered purposes.

Religious education provides an important foundation for Orthodox Jewish life. Through the study of sacred texts, the teaching of religious principles and the exploration of Jewish law and tradition, knowledge is carried from one generation to the next.
Study within Orthodox Jewish life has a long tradition of careful interpretation, discussion and the passing on of teachings. The continuation of that tradition depends in part on places and organisations devoted to learning. We value the role of educational institutions in creating settings where learning can continue. Teachers, scholars, students and charitable organisations all contribute to traditions of study that depend on dedication and suitable resources.
Our grant-making focus is on eligible organisations whose objectives advance Orthodox Jewish education. By supporting such organisations, we seek to contribute to the institutional foundations of religious learning.
We understand education as a continuing commitment, not merely a single event. Schools, houses of study and other charitable bodies may be responsible for sustaining learning over many years, but the nature of any grant must always fall within the purposes and responsibilities of the Trust.
How we support educational purposesOrthodox Jewish religious life encompasses worship, study, observance and participation in established traditions. Religious institutions provide places and opportunities for people to practise their faith and develop religious understanding.
We recognise the responsibilities involved in maintaining the work of these organisations. Our charitable purposes include supporting eligible organisations established to further Orthodox Jewish religion.
Institutions concerned with worship and practice may provide opportunities for study, reflection and participation while supporting the continuity of shared religious traditions. Our role is to consider eligible charitable organisations rather than represent ourselves as the operator of their religious activities.
Education and religious practice are closely connected: learning informs observance, and religious institutions provide settings in which knowledge and tradition remain part of community life.
Our charitable areas of support
We operate primarily as a grant-making charity. Rather than duplicating programmes run by established educational or religious organisations, we concentrate on considering charitable support aligned with our objectives.
We collect funds intended to further the charitable objectives of our Trust. We do not present these resources as unrestricted funds for unrelated activities.
We review the connection between proposed support and our registered objectives.
Our trustees retain responsibility for decisions and the application of available resources. Approval cannot be presumed from an initial enquiry.
Chesed is commonly associated with kindness, generosity and care for others within Jewish tradition.
For our Trust, these ideas are closely connected with the thoughtful administration of charitable resources. Giving should serve a clear purpose, with trustees considering how the resources entrusted to the organisation are applied.
Acting in accordance with our charitable objectives and responsibilities.
Keeping our work focused on Orthodox Jewish education and religion.
Valuing learning and religious practice across generations.
Thoughtfully considering the use of resources for their intended purposes.
Maintaining appropriate oversight and trustee consideration.
The Chesed Charitable Trust is based in Salford, Greater Manchester, while our registered area of operation covers England and Wales.
We remain focused on organisations whose purposes relate to Orthodox Jewish education and religion, rather than on operating a single local building or activity programme.

We remain committed to supporting charitable organisations whose purposes advance Orthodox Jewish education and religious life, subject to trustee oversight and resources available.
Our location in Salford and our registered area of operation across England and Wales provide the context for our continuing work. Our charitable direction is defined by purpose rather than by a particular building, programme or publicity campaign.
