01 / Oversight

Trustee-led governance

We recognise that charitable giving carries responsibilities. The resources entrusted to The Chesed Charitable Trust are held for purposes connected to the advancement of Orthodox Jewish education and religion.

Our trustees are responsible for the overall management and administration of the Trust. They consider how charitable resources may be applied in accordance with our objectives, the law and the funds available.

As a grant-making organisation, we place particular importance on the connection between the purpose of a proposed grant and the charitable objectives of the Trust.

02 / Trustee responsibilities

Four areas of oversight.

01

Charitable direction

Keeping our work focused on the advancement of Orthodox Jewish education and religion.

02

Management and administration

Overseeing the Trust’s affairs, records and charitable resources in accordance with trustee duties.

03

Grant-making decisions

Considering requests in the light of our objectives and available resources; enquiries never imply approval.

04

Accountability

Meeting relevant regulatory and reporting responsibilities, including statutory filings.

03 / Stewardship

Stewardship of charitable resources

The Chesed Charitable Trust exists to collect and distribute charitable funds for its stated purposes. We recognise the importance of maintaining a clear connection between available funds and the organisations or activities supported through grants.

Our trustees oversee decisions about the use of charitable resources. The Trust does not operate a general programme of grants to individuals, and it does not promise funding simply because an enquiry has been submitted.

04 / Charitable purposes

Our two areas of focus.

01

Orthodox Jewish education

Supporting charitable organisations whose purposes advance religious education, study and the transmission of Jewish knowledge.

02

Orthodox Jewish religion

Supporting eligible organisations whose work advances religious worship, observance, learning and institutions.

05 / Transparency

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

How we consider charitable decisions

Our work requires care at each point where charitable resources are received, administered and distributed.

The trustees consider whether an organisation’s charitable work and the proposed purpose of assistance fall within our objectives. The existence of a worthwhile educational or religious initiative does not, by itself, establish an entitlement to a grant. Each decision must be appropriate to the Trust’s purposes and resources.

We recognise the importance of being consistent about the scope of the Trust’s activities. Our purpose is specific rather than general: supporting the advancement of Orthodox Jewish education and religion through grants to organisations. This focus informs our approach to enquiries as well as decisions about charitable expenditure.

Alongside questions of purpose and alignment, trustees must have regard to their responsibilities for the charity as a whole. Maintaining suitable information, exercising judgement and keeping the Trust’s objectives in view are essential parts of responsible administration.

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

Information available to the public

Our status as a registered charity provides a public point of reference.

Information recorded with the Charity Commission can be consulted independently, including the charity’s registration details, trustees and filed financial returns. We encourage people seeking formal or current regulatory information to refer to that register rather than relying solely on a website summary.

Our own website is intended to explain our charitable purposes in plain language, outline our role as a grant-making trust and provide a route for relevant correspondence. It is not a substitute for statutory filings or the decisions of the trustees.

For organisations considering contacting us, a clear description of their objectives and proposed charitable activities makes the purpose of the enquiry easier to understand. We welcome relevant enquiries, while keeping decisions under trustee consideration.
