Who we are

The Chesed Charitable Trust is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (No. 283671), based at 158 Cromwell Road, Salford M6 6DE and established on 1 January 1961. We are a grant-making trust: our role is to collect funds and distribute them to organisations which are set up to further orthodox Jewish education and religion.

The meaning of Chesed

The trust takes its name from the Hebrew word chesed (חֶסֶד) — loving-kindness. In Jewish tradition, chesed is far more than charity in the narrow sense: it is one of the pillars on which the world stands, a kindness given freely and without expectation of return. It is a value at the very heart of Jewish life, and it describes exactly what the trust seeks to do: to turn the kindness of its supporters into tangible support for Jewish learning and religious life.

More than sixty years of quiet service

Established in 1961, the trust has now served its purpose across more than six decades. In that time the community around it has grown and changed, but the trust's role has remained constant: to be a faithful channel between generosity and need. It does not seek publicity for the help it gives; its satisfaction is in the work itself.

How we are run

The trust is overseen by its trustees, who are responsible for its administration and for ensuring that funds are applied only to its charitable purpose. As a grant-making body, the trust works through other organisations rather than running activities of its own.
